  Free Government Benefits
The federal government does not advertise widely, except perhaps for military recruiting. Thus, very few people are aware of the large and varied benefits, services and valuable information available to the general public. Don't feel reluctant to cash in on any benefit to which you might be entitled. The government encourages you to do so; these agencies are funded with part of your tax dollar. The value of the benefits listed in this report are worth many thousands of dollars but are free to you, and, of course, not available elsewhere.

EMPLOYMENT, JOB TRAINING & CAREERS. If you are a member of a low income family, between the ages of 16 to 21, you can get on-the-job experience or funds to further your education. Write: Neighborhood Youth Corps, U.S. Department of Labor, Washington, DC 20210.

Want a job as a tradesperson? You can obtain information for job security as an apprentice by requesting these books from U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training, Washington, DC 20210: "Planned Training - Your Future Security", "The National Apprenticeship Program", "Careers in Apprenticeship."

The Job Corps offers good training for future careers. You get the opportunity to acquire skills, receive living allowances, room and board, clothing, medical and dental care, plus a small salary and the chance to serve in a foreign country. GENERAL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE. A large volume of publications dealing with operating a business successfully, effective salesmanship and business management, visual aids, and a booklet "Selling by Mail Order", may be obtained from the U.S. Small Business Administration, P.O. FREE PUBLICATIONS. In addition to the many booklets available from the various federal agencies there are hundreds of other publications issued free, or at low bargain prices, concerning almost every conceivable subject - from consumer interest to technological data.

FARMING. A huge library and consultation is available in the field of agriculture concerning crops, pests, fertilizer, animals and any subject or problem dealing with farming and agriculture. Contact the Division of Reference, National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, Md 20705 and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Consumer and Marketing Service, Washington, DC 20250.

Free architectural designs and plans for farm and rural structures are available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Publications Division, Office of Information, Washington, DC 20250.

GOVERNMENT LAND FOR SALE, CHEAP! Want a hideaway cottage, establish a resort or ranch, obtain cattle grazing or mineral rights? It's possible through the vast land sales conducted by the federal government. Billions of acres of U.S. owned land, mostly in the picturesque western states, are periodically auctioned off in small acreage lots to hundreds of acres units. FOR ALIENS. Free textbooks and correspondence courses on becoming U.S.A. citizens are available from the local U.S. Department of Education or the Immigration & Naturalization Service.

If you are a creative person, the government may pay 50% of the cost of your next project. Grants are made in music, dance, drama, radio, movie, TV, writing, sculpture, photography, painting, etc. Request information for the field of your interest from: National Endowment for the Arts, 1800 "G" St. NW, Washington, DC 20506.

If you are a science teacher or student, you can many educational and instructional visual aids from: Technical Information, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Oak Ridge, Tn 37830. Specify your particular interest and grade level.

GOVERNMENT SURPLUS. As requirements change, thousands of items the government has purchased now are classed as unneeded and are offered to the general public. Items range from office supplies, to vehicles, to boats, to property which can be purchased at a small fraction of their cost. Ask to be placed on the list to receive announcements by writing to Property Management & Disposal Service, General Services Administration, Washington, DC 20405 and Department of Defense, Surplus Sales, P.O. Box 1370, Battle Creek, Mi 49016.

VETERANS BENEFITS. Many benefits are waiting to be claimed by military veterans. Disabled veterans may be entitled to pensions, automobiles, prosthetic appliances, medical treatment for themselves and their dependants. Generally other benefits available to active, retired military personnel and their dependents are: death compensation, pensions, reimbursement of burial expenses, burial flag, burial in a national cemetery, headstone markers, education, job finding assistance, civil service employment preference, low interest loans for home and business purchases. Contact the nearest Veterans Administration for special details about your eligibility for any benefit.

UNCLE SAM'S LOTTERY. Each month, expired federal land leases are made available in a "lottery" because they are not situated in known oil and natural gas geological formations. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. Besides the financial help already described in this report, the government is a source for other money benefits.

Business capital or expansion loans will be considered by SBA at low interest rates and long term financing. Special consideration is given to responsible persons and prospective enterprises whose owners encounter difficulty obtaining financing through normal channels. If you are a low income or disadvantaged person, you may qualify for an "Economic Opportunity Loan" from the same agency.

Cash Grants for farm workers is awarded by the Office of National Programs, Employment and Training Administration, Department of Labor, Washington, DC 20210.

Outright grants or non-interest loans for low income families or senior citizens in rural areas to fix up their homes: Contact the nearest Farm Home Administration Office or the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

Financial aid programs for farmers; get free literature describing such programs from: Information Officer, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC 20250.

Home Improvement Loans: you may qualify for improvements to your own home or small apartment building. Apply to any commercial lender participating in the FHA program or write to: Federal Housing Administration, Department of Housing & Urban Development, Washington, DC 20410.

SELLING TO THE GOVERNMENT. If you are a small businessman, and are located in a labor surplus or redevelopment area, you get preferential consideration for selling your product or service to the government. Contact: General Services Administration, Washington, DC 20405.

FOOD STAMPS. If you are in the poverty level group, have expenses for dependents or sick care you may be eligible for food stamps. Contact the Food Stamp division, Consumer & Marketing Services, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC 20250.

If operating funds are cut back, some agencies may have to change or modify their existing benefits.
